WHERE YOU STUMBLE: THERE LIES YOUR TREASURE

"We’re interested in the news of the day and the problems of the hour. Thus distracted, we no longer listen to those who speak of the eternal values that have to do with the centering of our lives."

- Joseph Campbell, The Power of Myth.

There is great precedent of more serious stories about our human relationship to God being told in comic format. In 1978, Will Eisner, the creator of “The Spirit,” after a long hiatus from comics, returned and created what is considered the first modern graphic novel: “A Contract with God.”  Art Spiegelman, the author of “Maus,” wrote, “[“A Contract with God”] is an inspiration to several generations of cartoonists.”

Based on this inspiration, I decided to turn some of the stories I found in "The Spirituality of Imperfection" into a graphic novel of my own. I would include stories from the worlds’ major ancient philosophies and religions. In an attempt to illustrate their commonalities further, I would remove any sign of their origin and present them as if they were from one place, one common spiritual practice.

MEDITATION AND MAKING

The original seed for this project was planted over a year ago when I had the great opportunity to read the book “The Spirituality of Imperfection” with a group of friends. Like many other experiences that I have been open to in the last several years, the reading and subsequent sharing changed my life.

This project started as something very private and personal, but I was inspired by the following quote from “The Spirituality of Imperfection”:
